The Effect of Principal Emotional Intelligence on Teacher Performance at State Junior High School

This research is based on the importance of the principal's role as an educational leader who must possess strong emotional intelligence to manage both their own emotions and those of others appropriately. Such competence is expected to create a conducive work environment and enhance teacher performance. This study aims to examine the extent to which principals' emotional intelligence affects teacher performance in public junior high schools in Mandastana Sub-district. The specific objectives of this study are: (1) to identify the level of emotional intelligence of principals in public junior high schools in Mandastana Sub-district, (2) to assess the work performance of teachers in these schools, and (3) to determine whether there is a significant influence of principals' emotional intelligence on teacher performance. A quantitative research method with a survey approach was employed. The research instrument was a questionnaire distributed to 34 respondents teachers from public junior high schools in Mandastana Sub-district using the convenience sampling technique. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire, with the emotional intelligence variable measured using four indicators: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, and Relationship Management. Validity, reliability, normality, homogeneity, and linearity tests were conducted to ensure that the data met the assumptions for statistical analysis. The results indicate a positive and significant influence of principals' emotional intelligence on teacher performance in public junior high schools in Mandastana Sub-district. This suggests that principals who can effectively manage their emotions have a positive impact on teacher performance. Therefore, it is recommended that principals continuously develop their emotional intelligence through relevant training and coaching programs.
