Abstract

Education plays a vital role in nurturing individuals who excel academically while embodying human values like empathy and collaboration. However, many schools, particularly rural faith-based institutions, lack leadership strategies that prioritize these humanistic principles. This study examines how humanistic value-based leadership, operationalized through the VESDA framework (valuing, empathizing, serving, developing, and engaging), enhances student well-being and teacher performance in underserved educational settings. Using a systematic literature review of peer-reviewed articles (2015–2025) from Scopus, ERIC, and Google Scholar, this research identifies key themes through thematic analysis. The findings demonstrate that VESDA-based leadership fosters inclusive school environments by strengthening trust, motivation, and collaboration. Principals who value individuals, practice empathy, provide service-oriented support, and engage stakeholders create conditions where both students and teachers thrive academically and socio-emotionally. The study concludes that humanistic leadership centered on VESDA principles offers a transformative approach for rural schools, bridging the gap between academic excellence and holistic development. It provides practical strategies for leaders to cultivate nurturing educational ecosystems, particularly in resource-constrained contexts. This work advances the discourse on value-based leadership by demonstrating its applicability in primary and secondary education while offering actionable insights for practitioners.
